What is HD DVD?

HD DVD is the next generation of DVD technology: High Definition DVD. It is the official DVD Forum high-definition format. Its most important features are:
  • High resolution picture: full HD resolution of 1920x1080 is supported (six times more pixels than DVD)
  • Greatly increased disc capacity (over five times that of DVD)
  • Better quality video encoding, using VC1 and H264 (MPEG4) video standards
  • Rich interactivity (for so much more than just menus) via HDi™
  • Higher resolution audio than DVD: Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD , and Dolby TrueHD
  • Same physical size as DVDs and CDs
  • Allows legal copies to be made e.g. to a PC using managed copy
