What does an HD DVD disc look like?

It looks just like a regular DVD to the naked eye. They come in different cases though: slightly smaller cases than DVDs.

Will an HD DVD disc play in a DVD player?

No, you need an HD DVD player to play an HD DVD. However if the disc is a hybrid, then it will work in an old fashioned DVD player but just as a normal DVD – none of the HD DVD goodness.

Will a DVD disc play in an HD DVD Player?

Yes, the new players can play the older format discs. They will likely offer DVD up-conversion to make those DVDs look as nice as they can on your HDTV.

Do HD DVDs have region coding?

Not at the current time, no. This might change in the future, but for now the players and discs are all region-free. That means you can buy an HD DVD in the UK for example and it will work fine in a USA player.

Can I copy HD DVDs?

A lot of effort has gone into AACS so the studios are hoping that you can’t copy the discs. However HD DVD includes a feature called Managed Copy, which is a way to make a legal copy of a disc so you can play it over the network in your house or on your portable devices.

Is it spelt HD-DVD or HD DVD?

It is HD DVD, never with the dash.
