What is HD DVD?
HD DVD is the next generation of DVD technology: High Definition DVD. It is the official DVD Forum high-definition format. Its most
important features are:
- High resolution picture: full HD resolution of 1920x1080 is supported (six times more pixels than DVD)
- Greatly increased disc capacity (over five times that of DVD)
- Better quality video encoding, using VC1 and H264 (MPEG4) video standards
- Rich interactivity (for so much more than just menus) via HDi™
- Higher resolution audio than DVD: Dolby Digital Plus,
DTS-HD
, and Dolby TrueHD
- Same physical size as DVDs and CDs
- Allows legal copies to be made e.g. to a PC using managed copy
